AMERICAN SAILING ASSOCIATION (ASA) COURSES:

In order to obtain American Sailing Association (ASA) Certifications, all ASA classes are taught and certified by ASA Affiliate schools who hire ASA Instructors for the classes being taught. The ASA Instructor has to work under the administration of an ASA affiliate school. In some situations when there is no local ASA school handy, ASA has converted Instructors using ASA’s internal virtual school as the host school.

Current Sail Canada (SC) Instructors, or any other experienced and qualified sailing Instructor from a non-ASA system can be converted by applying for ASA Instructor Certifications through a one-day ASA-200 Instructor Qualification Clinic (IQC).

ASA Affiliate schools can convert Students certifications using the ASA Challenge process. If you are an experienced sailor but do not have official ASA certifications and if you are looking to bareboat charter a boat in foreign waters and have the experience sailing but do not have the needed ASA certifications, you can challenge the ASA standards on any ASA course.

If you are challenging multiple ASA certifications, you will need to demonstrate the Standards for each certification, but will only have to take the written exam of the highest certification you are challenging.
